She could sense his sadness. It was the one human emotion immortals knew all to well. With him, however, that sadness had been kept at bay, like a light keeps the dark shadows away.
But when he did not extend his arms in welcome to her, when his eyes did not meet hers.. she knew.
So stood there, facing the dying sun and let the emptiness once more take over.
"This is where we say goodbye, isn't it?" her voice quavered, her heart felt as if someone squeezed it tight, and she fought to catch her breath, as if drowning, sinking.. slowly..
"yes, " his voice was soft, barely above a whisper. The sound of his deep smooth voice always drew a visceral response from her, deep in her core..and this time it was no different, except now it made her soul ache.
There was no explanation, no promises of a return, no cliches exchanged over love never lost, of the remains of memories in the heart. Instead, there was just the sound of his footsteps as he walked away.
...and she wept...
